Save August 6 and August 8, 2008 for the Americas Society and Council of the Americas (AS/COA) annual Latin American Cities Conferences in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Montevideo, Uruguay respectively.

In past years, AS/COA convened private and public sector leaders at these events to discuss topics including the business climate in the host countries and challenges and opportunities for promoting growth with social inclusion.

Over 400 senior-level private and public sector representatives convened for the 2007 Annual AS/COA Latin American Cities Conference in Argentina, organized with the Cámara Argentina de Comercio (CAC). Keynote speakers included H.E. Alberto Fernandez, H.E. Julio de Vido, H.E. Jorge Taiana, H.E. Miguel Peirano, Martín Redrado, and a special closing session by Senator and presidential candidate Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Other speakers included executives from Standard & Poor’s, Merrill Lynch, FedEx, Kissinger McLarty Associates, Google, International Development Ireland, Argentina’s Investment Promotion Agency, and Microsoft.

Over 175 senior-level private sector leaders and government officials attended the Latin American Cities Conference in Montevideo in 2007. The conference was organized with the Chamber of Commerce Uruguay-USA and focused on challenges to the energy sector in the Americas and Uruguay’s trade and investment outlook. Keynote speakers included H.E. Danilo Astori, Minister of Economy and Finance; and H.E. Jorge Lepra, Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining. Other speakers included representatives from International Development Ireland, Financial Times, Pan American Energy LLC, General Electric Energy, Drever y Lavista, Microsoft, Fitch Ratings, Tata Consultancy Services Iberoamerica, and Banco Itaú, S.A.

Americas Society and Council of the Americas programs promote the understanding of the political, economic, and cultural issues that define and challenge the Americas today, from the Arctic Circle to the southernmost tip of Argentina. Understanding the people and societies of the region is essential to promoting an agenda of democracy, the rule of law, and free trade.
